Teachers are Born, Not Made

Are teachers born? This is a question that caused some controversy in class today. I believe that there are three types of teachers; those that shouldn't, those that should and those that are. Truthfully, there are some teachers and educators out there that really shouldn't be teaching because they either cannot motivate children, aren’t nice people or they just don't care. Are these people born to be teachers?

Saying that someone is born to do something diminishes the hard work that they have put into their skill. Wayne Gretzky was not born playing hockey but was out on the ice doing drills at three years old. He worked at it. Mozart could compose a song without editing but that does not mean he did not have to learn how to play first. He worked at it. Teachers are not born as teachers but as individuals with a desire to learn, grow and to help younger generations to reach their potential. Teachers want to help students attain the knowledge needed to succeed. Teachers need to learn how to teach. I believe that the desire to teach can be something that develops and that characteristics that make a good teacher are embedded into people’s personalities. If teachers are born, then why am I in teachers college?
